  1. Hi Sonya. Your painting is full of light. It reminds me of the sparse look of our woods in spring. I like the way the purple of the distant trees is echoed in the detail of the forest floor. Jane

  2. Sonya, there is something about your recent paintings where I tend to look at the design of them or the composition first rather than the subject. The lines, shapes, movement jump out to at me before the landscape, flower, tree. I know we’ve discussed abstract vs. realistic before and to me it seems like you are merging the two more and more. It reminds me of the drawing exercises from school where we had to balance the negative space around the objects with the objects themselves so that your eye didn’t know which was which. Does that make sense?

    • Hi Jack – your comment is really interesting for me because I have been feeling lately that something is changing slightly in my approach.

In fact I’ve spent a large part of this week end exploring collage, but I think i’m not taking it any further at the moment as I feel like I’ve arrived at an impasse. One of my paintings (ironically the “Lines of life” ) had an accident – something fell on it & the canvas tore so I decided to cut it up into pieces! I’ve quite enjoyed the process, but so far have not arrived at a satisfying result!!

And yes the negative space way of seeing makes sense entirely.

  3. I like what seems to be still winter in the far background and yet the spring flowers are coming up in the foreground. I hope spring gets here soon. I’m tired of the winter.

  4. Nice to hear from you Carol. I think a lot of us are tired of winter now! Where I live it seems to be swinging back & forth unable to decide – today seems to be in favour of Spring – it’s suddenly shot up to 22°C, (sorry for you that’s maybe in the 60°Fs?) but that doesn’t mean it won’t shoot back down again if recent occurances are anything to go by!
